The Rebirth of State Street the Great Street
Chicago’s July speaker, Michael Edwards, President & CEO of the Chicago Loop Alliance provided great insights surrounding the rebirth of State Street. From Congress Parkway to Wacker Drive, the Alliance provides a range of services to retain tenants, identify new tenants and/or sell property. The State Street Special Service Area (SAA) is in place for 13 years and generates nearly $3 million annually to help organizations residing on State Street. Some of the initiatives to make State Street come alive include advocating for more police, planting of flowers, street cleaners and introducing programs like bike shares, powered skate boards, etc. to get around the area more easily.
Mr. Edwards highlighted other initiatives such as adding tables and chairs at the top of State and Wacker. Though the city had a policy of no benches, the addition of tables invites engagement of residents and tourists alike to relax and people watch. Another very successful initiative titled “Activate Chicago” includes live entertainment and networking in alley areas surrounding State Street. The events are changing the perception of the loop from being solely 9 to 5 community to one that has much to offer well after the work day. Live music and live art are bringing together a diverse group of people enjoying the city from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. as part of the Active Chicago initiative.
