What’s next for Pittsburgh’s last urban brownfield and largest remaining riverfront tract?

Pittsburgh’s Real Professionals Network this month heard from ReMake Group CEO Rebecca Flora, lead on the project to develop the former steel mill site consisting of about 180 acres of land. The vision for the site is to create a model for sustainable development that includes offices, research and development, light manufacturing, housing and retail, with trails and roads that accommodate for walkers and cyclists.

Three foundations own the property, and, with the City of Pittsburgh ReMake is working to make sure the development is tied to and enhances the communities around it, Hazelwood and Oakland. The Regional Development Corporation of Southwestern Pennsylvania (or RIDC) owns property in the middle, and they will open the first building, Mill 19, one of the last buildings left from Hazelwood Coke Works. The nonprofit has a long history of repurposing former industrial sites.
