At the September 22 Multi-Discipline meeting, members discussed the continued interest in student housing around the University of South Alabama despite the lack of development on the university’s perimeter. Pete Riehm of NAI Mobile expressed frustration at the loss of a recent student housing development opportunity near campus due to the Mobile City Council’s recent parking requirements for such projects. Riehm indicated that the city’s requirement of 1.1 parking space per bed is too stringent, and has “chased off” some prospects. Riehm added that there also needs to be an overarching plan for developing the fringes of the campus, as the university is doing tremendous improvements with a master plan, while the surrounding area is not growing with such vision.
