At the June 27 Gulf South Multi-Discipline Group meeting, Fred Rendfrey of the Downtown Mobile Alliance detailed the dramatic explosion of growth in the downtown Mobile market as of late. Interest in residential and office space is booming, and as a result, several multi-family residential projects are on the table. In addition, while retail has been a little slow to relocate to the downtown area, the restaurant business is performing at a high level, with numerous new restaurants opening, and several existing establishments planning key expansions. Because of the boom in redevelopment in the core of downtown Mobile, future plans are now focusing on the yet-untouched northwest quadrant, where there is opportunity to redevelopment of some single-family residential projects.
