At this month’s DC Mastermind Meeting, the just-announced decision by Amazon to house half its new headquarters in Northern Virginia dominated the discussion. Attendees ruminated on, among other things, the enormity of the incentives the behemoth company was offered and the expected multiplier effect and ancillary impacts of its arrival, including on office vacancy rates, affordable housing, and the employment market. Other topics included DC’s pending legislation to regulate short-term rentals and the importance of cautiously taking advantage of Opportunity Zones for shovel-ready projects while rules are still being worked out.
