While industrial activity is continuing to heat up on the Gulf Coast (particularly in the Theodore and Hwy. 43 corridors), the buzz continues to center around downtown Mobile, with a steady stream of exciting projects revitalizing office and residential development in the heart of the city. Guest Fred Rendfrey of the Downtown Mobile Alliance said he is routinely receiving inquiries regarding needs for office space, and hotel and multi-family development continues to gain traction.
One obstacle facing continued redevelopment in the future could be the limited amount of available space not already tied up in existing projects, as the “low-hanging fruit” available areas have already been snapped up. Regardless, the future looks bright for downtown Mobile, according to Rendfrey, who said that in the last 18 months, 17 new restaurants have either opened or are in the pipeline for the downtown corridor.
