New Detroit REAL Professionals Member Oliver Wolcott of Interior Environments is celebrating 20 years in business. In a reflective way, he described how his business has been adapting to new inquiries and demands by customers in the field. Interior Environments handles projects from a few chairs to enormous projects of 50,000 to 100,000 square feet.

“We are not unique in that we sell furniture,” Oliver shared. “Because of new technology and design aspects, we have developed a much more consultative approach. Our larger, more sophisticated clients are asking us to do more of the upfront work with space utilization, cost per square foot.”

Oliver further explained that clients are refreshing their spaces every 5 to 7 years and this is being driven by technology. The company is seeing clients going into smaller spaces and the ability to get someone in a small space with a computer screen has totally changed the way design can work.

Interior Environments is working with Plante Moran to do their Detroit offices. Wolcott explains, “We work with Oliver Hatcher on that project. The majority of it is space efficiency and technology.”
