Mobile County District Three Commissioner Jerry Carl took time out at the November 15 meeting of the Gulf South Mastermind Group to discuss the state of Mobile County, covering a range of economic development topics and providing a forecast for what’s on the horizon. Carl provided a glimpse behind the recruitment of the coming Walmart distribution hub to western Mobile County, and what it will ultimately mean for the local economy. He said that while Mobile definitely needs heavy industry and jobs (such as at Airbus or Austal) that requires some degree of specialized training, the jobs at the Walmart hub will be “jobs anyone can get.” He said the hub will handle approximately 700 trucks per day, which will have a ripple effect that touches the state docks, local trucking companies, and other service providers.
